I have long been fascinated by the Chinese concept of yin-yang. There is something about the balance of nature through opposing forces which speaks to my core. Without the dark, there can be no light. This mirror is my interpretation of that idea. The rails flow seamlessly from concave to convex curves to simulate the relationship between positive and negative energies. These are not separate entities; rather one flows from the other. The rails rest in opposing directions to symbolize the balance between these forces. As one exists, the other is always there to provide harmony.
For this piece, I selected a combination of walnut and cherry. The species of wood are not only durable, helping the mirror stand the test of time but they also naturally compliment each other.
The finishing processes I used are those employed by fine craftsmen of the mid-1800’s. Using a blend of linseed oil and beeswax, with the finish being finish rubbed into the wood so that it is absorbed rather than merely coating over the top. This finish enhances the natural beauty of the materials while providing protection which is integrated into the work. This process does take more time and effort, but it is worth it.
